How to Wind a Rolex Watch Properly

Winding a Rolex watch properly ensures its accuracy and longevity. While newer Rolex models typically feature automatic movements that wind themselves through daily wear, some models still require manual winding. Here are the steps to properly wind a Rolex watch:

  1. Ensure that the crown is in its original position: Before winding your Rolex, make sure the crown (the small knob on the side of the watch) is pushed in and screwed down tightly. This ensures that the watch is protected against water ingress.
  2. Gently unscrew the crown: Slowly unscrew the crown by twisting it counterclockwise until it pops out. Be cautious not to force it or unscrew it while it is in a locked position.
  3. Wind the watch: Once the crown is unscrewed and in the first position (pulled out slightly), start winding the watch. Rotate the crown clockwise in a gentle, but continuous motion. Turn the crown at least 20-30 times to fully wind the mainspring. It is important to avoid over-winding, so stop once you feel resistance or if the crown doesn’t wind anymore.
  4. Set the time: After winding the watch, pull the crown out to the second position (fully extended) to set the time. Rotate the crown clockwise or counterclockwise to adjust the watch hands to the desired time.
  5. Push and screw the crown back: Once the time is set, gently push the crown back to its original position against the case. Then, firmly and gently screw the crown in a clockwise direction until it is tightly secured. This helps maintain the water resistance of the watch.
  6. Give the watch a gentle shake: If your Rolex has stopped running, you can give it a gentle shake or swing it back and forth for a few seconds to initiate the automatic movement.

Remember to wind your manual-wind Rolex regularly, especially if you don’t wear it every day, to keep the movement functioning properly. It’s recommended to wind it at the same time every day to ensure consistency. Following these steps will help you properly wind your Rolex and ensure its accurate timekeeping.
